Gingerbread Train!

Okay technically this isn't a cake but we DID use buttercream icing like I use on most of my cakes. That and I'm so happy to show that my son and I made something together. He loved doing it despite my need for perfectionism. LOL I would put the frosting where it showed on the cover of the box kit and I told my son where to put them. He was a good sport!

Ammo Cake!

My sister called me this past week to do a cake for her husband. I said I would and though she would have liked a different cake I made a more traditional cake that would be less complicated for such short notice and no fondant.
The cake was made of Rainbow Chip like I had made the Temple cake. The chocolate frosting was homemade-2 batches worth. The "weaving" of the chocolate was something I had not done before and I wanted to try it. As easy as the process was it was that much more time- consuming to do. But I liked that it forced me to switch hands over and over to complete- a nice challenge. The light and dark gray was buttercream frosting. Ammo is not my brother-in-laws real name but its a nickname. As for the "battle ax" it's actually a Rock Band 2 guitar that he "bought" on the game. We like to play Rock Band every now and then.
Happy Birthday Ammo!!!!

Krispy Donut Cake

My brother-in-law's wife asked me this afternoon to make a "cake" out of Krispy Kreme donuts for her son's birthday (which was today). She must've been very trusting to let me do something like this, cuz I had no clue what to do. Ironically I had some frosting left over from both the Temple cake and the Thankful For... cake so I told her I could use that and she agreed. I knew her son liked Smallville so I tried to put the symbol of Superman on there. It's not great, obviously, but it's not like a real cake either. On the top it says "Happy Birth" then the Superman symbol is in the middle and underneath the "S" is "Day Tyler". I realized mid "Birth" that I should have put "B-day" but whatever. The Birthday Man wasn't displeased at least but he is a gentle soul and probably said it doesn't look to bad so it didn't hurt my feelings. JK but anyway...

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Birthday Tyler!

Thankful For...Cake

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!!

I made a Thankful For...Cake for Thanksgiving tomorrow. I know I could add more things that I'm thankful for but I just haven't thought of them yet. Plus working on this all day tired me out- which is why this isn't my best work- obviously. But it could've been worse I suppose.

Again Happy Thanksgiving!

Sprinkled Decoration

When I bought the Buttercream frosting at Fry's for my nephew's cake (below) they had this huge champagne glass (at least I think it's a champagne glass) filled with sprinkles. Yes, you read right sprinkles. I thought it was pretty dang cool! So I took a picture.

Mesa AZ LDS Temple Cake

I drew this a couple days before after taking pictures of the Mesa Temple.
Lot's O' Stuff goes into making a cake like this and even this doesn't really show how much.
Rainbow Chip cake as requested and ready to put frosting then fondant on top.
If the pix seem blurry it's because they are, it's not your eyes. Well maybe it's your eyes anyway... first cake frosted and fondant-ed.
2 square cakes on top. Forsted and fondant-ed. Then added more fondant for more features of the Temple.

From the picture of the cake supplies to these were taken Thursday.
Marking the windows for future reference.
This is suppose-ed front of Temple.
This is suppose-ed back.
Friday morning I added black fondant for the windows and doors.
No I did not forget a window I promise you. You will see.
This side of the Temple doesn't really exist. However, I did the best I could to mold it into the side of the Mesa Temple.
And the back. Again I didn't forget windows those are actually alcoves that DO exist in the Temple.
If you look closely or click on the picture you can see extra detail for the pillars of the Temple.
These next group of photos are the photos I took of the real Mesa AZ Temple and the finished Temple cake I made. Enjoy!
Temple side with Reflection Pool. And see no real window on the 2nd from the left.
The same side.
The back of the Temple was mostly covered with trees so forgive the lack of straight-on view.
The back. If I had more room I'd have "trees" too.
The side of the Temple that sort of exists. Go see the Temple yourself if you don't believe me.
My best depiction of such a lengthy building.
The front and entrance. To the right you will see the building continue- hence why I said my view of the Temple side doesn't really exist. I'm silly I know.
The front and entrance with a green 8 (my nephew's favorite color).

Happy 8th Birthday and a joyous Baptism to you, Mark!!!!!

Flowers and Candyflies!

For my sis-in-law's baby shower I made candy butterflies (candyflies) made of chocolate mint and vanilla...

I also made butterflies out of Starbursts, Sour Worms and Sweet Tarts (my original plan was to go with M&Ms but one of my sisters thought it better to use something without chocolate).
The cupcakes were made in yellow, pink and purple flower cups. Which I thought looked deformed, despite what people said. LOL The candies went on top as if they were "visiting" the flower. I did this because my niece has flowers and butterflies in her room (not real ones, duh). I got some good compliments from people, especially the chocolate minted ones.

The cupcakes were made with yellow cake. This big flower cake was actually a brownie cake. I knew that my sis-in-law loved brownies, and one of the brownie boxes we had told us how to make a brownie cake and I couldn't resist the opportunity. The shape of the flower came from a flower shaped pan. Trust me I'm not willing to try sculpting just yet. LOL The frosting on the cake was the vanilla I used for the colors on the minted butterflies becuz:
1) Brownies hold their own taste and adding regular frosting seemed wrong to me.
2)I already had the vanilla and I had run out of frosting from the cupcakes. LOL
The original thought of the colors came from the colors in my niece's room. And making the colors kind of burst from yellow to purple was to include the three colors I had. I wasn't actually thinking that it would look this cool. And the idea of vines? Well I was running out of time but the cake needed more than the outline of the middle and petals. As it was I was late to the party (hee hee), but it all worked out.
The cake was a little dry for my taste but nothing a glass of milk couldn't cure. ;)
